Collective Bargaining Coming to TSA

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement regarding news from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), that after careful consideration, Administrator John Pistole has determined that Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) should be allowed to participate in collective bargaining activities that relate to employment and not security matters.

I want to commend Administrator Pistole for taking this positive step forward in the granting of collective bargaining rights to the nation's Transportation Security Officers. Representatives Lowey and Jackson Lee have joined me in this effort since 2006 and today's announcement marks a new path forward for the TSA workforce, a critical first line of defense in aviation security.

As proven by the performance of other federal security officers, collective bargaining does not diminish our security -- it can actually enhance workforce productivity and TSA's mission. As I mentioned to the Administrator this morning, I look forward to working with him further to ensure that TSOs are also afforded the same benefits as other employees in the federal pay system.
